Tour Details
*Asheten Maryam, the Hudad and its’ Community, Abune Yosef, Kenkanit Mikael, Yemmerah Kristos.
Day 1) After being picked up from your hotel in town, you will be driven part way to Asheten Maryam where you will hike the last 30 minute stretch up to this spectacularly situated church. Following a visit of its’ grounds, you will commence the hike across the mountain farmland and then up to the Hudad Plateau past the Abuchagula nature reserve. The hike takes between 1 hour and a half and 2 hours.
Upon arrival, you will be served a freshly cooked lunch, and spend the early afternoon exploring and relaxing on the Hudad plateau.
Local villagers take turn in hosting guests, and at some stage during your visit you will be invited to visit a local home and learn more about local lifestyles and traditions and take part in a coffee ceremony.
Accommodation will be in one of our rustic stone huts.
Day 2) Today you will have another early start. Your first stop will be across over to the nearby plateau at the Hudad Community School, built by local villagers to support the many families scattered in the countryside who are too far from Lalibela to send the children there.
After this, you will commence the hike to Abune Yosef which is 4 to 5 hours away via mountain farmland and several villages. A picnic lunch will be served at a suitable spot along the way.
The Abune Yosef Conservation area has a distinctive afro alpine flora, and a wide variety of wildlife species. You will be invited to climb up to the top of the mountain so as to be rewarded by the expansive views. It will also be possible to keep a look out for the highly endangered Ethiopian wolf and the many other animals and birds that call the conservation area their home.
Dinner will be over an open fire. You will sleep at the Abune Yosef Lodge.
Day 3) There will be another chance to roam around the conservation area in the early morning so as to improve chances of spotting more wolves before the long hike back to the Lalibela Hudad.
You will arrive at the Lodge in the midafternoon, in time to relax and take in the sunset before dinner.
Once again, you will sleep at one of our rustic stone huts.
Day 4) on your final day, there will be another long hike. This time across and down to the church of Yemmerha Kristos via the church of Gennetta Maryam. This will take 5 to 6 hours, with a picnic stop at an attractive viewpoint along the way.
After your visit at the church, a vehicle will pick you up and take you back to Lalibela in time for sunset.
