Day 1) After being picked up from your hotel in town, you will be driven part way to Asheten Maryam where you will hike the last 30 minute stretch up to this spectacularly situated church. Following a visit of its’ grounds, you will commence the hike across the mountain farmland and then up to the Hudad Plateau past the Abuchagula nature reserve. The hike takes between 1 hour and a half and 2 hours.
Upon arrival, you will be served a freshly cooked lunch, and spend the early afternoon exploring and relaxing on the Hudad plateau.
Accommodation will be in one of our rustic stone huts.
Day 2) Today you will visit the areas surrounding the Lodge. In the morning there will be a 4 hour return walk to the church of Kenkanit Mikael, across the Abuchagula reserve. In the afternoon, there will be a local community visit.
The local villagers take turns in hosting visitors, and you will be invited to visit a local home where you will be able to gain an understanding of local lifestyles and traditions and participate in a coffee ceremony.
All meals will be freshly cooked at the Lodge.
Day 3) Today you will have an early start. Your first stop will be across over to the nearby plateau at the Hudad Community School, built by local villagers and an Australian NGO to support the many families scattered in the countryside who are too far from Lalibela to send the children there.
Following this, you will start the ascent towards Abune Yosef. It will take around 3:30 hours to cross the upper plateau to the vehicular pickup point. Along the way, you will experience the rolling farmland that typifies the local highlands.
Here you will say goodbye to your mules and the vehicle will drive you up towards the peak, with stops along the way to take in views, and a picnic lunch. Weather permitting, the top of Abune Yosef offers dramatic views across the whole region.
In the early afternoon, the vehicle will commence its’ descent towards Lalibela, You will be given the choice to to hike the final 1:30 hour stretch towards Yemmerah Kristos chuch wwhich can be approached via an attractive mountain pass. After your visit, a vehicle will pick you up and drive you back to Lalibela in time for sunset.
